That the new 2019 R am (worked on one today) will apply the brakes (by itself) if one tries to reverse with mudded-over (dirty) rear park aid sensors. Got this from the trucks owner.

Kinja'd!!!

What might we collectively think about this?

So it’s sorta makes sense. Backup sensor thinks there’s something behind you that you dont see so it hits the brakes. Now, if it alerts you then you double tap the brake to override then sure no problem.

Also the new Ram styling is excellent. It's getting more of that extra busy Chevy and GMC look but it's still pretty Ram looking.

As long as the off button for the sensors is easy to reach I’m okay with it.

Yeah, the LAST time I was impressed with a new truck it was the last new R amin 09.  O therwise all new trucks mean I need to learn new wiring diagrams.   I’m sure one can adjust the park assist,  Mrs doorhandle’s escape allows turning it off for trailering etc.  That truck is not going to reverse while towing until the owner spends an hour reading the manual.

Same thing happens on my 2018 GC, but it also happens to any car with AEB. Just hit the button to turn off the sensors and you’re golden. More useless tech we don’t need.

I’m ok with beeping, but I would prefer to be in charge of the actual car.

I enjoy a clean car as much as the next guy, but I live on an unpaved road, so compromises have to be made as far as wash frequency goes. That said, w here exactly ar e these sensors located and how easily do they become dirty enough to engage the brakes? Is there some kind of aerodynamic voodoo going on that helps direct road debris from accumulating at the sensors? How often would you have to clean them during, say, a sloppy Michigan winter?

I un derstand why this system exists, but I ’m not convin ced that keeping these sensors clean is easier than checking mirrors and blind spots before reversing.

I’ve had that mentioned by customers with sensors knocked into the bumpers and dangling on the harness.

Also had a customer drive a vehicle in with the right quarter of the rear bumper, park sensor included, missing. The object sensor that dangles off the right quarter below the bumper skin was also absent, the entire harness severed inside the cover against the reinforcement. “Apeshit” was the customer’s description of the dash/car on the drive in (guy was a fucking hero for even driving the thing, IMO).

I’ll never buy anything with a driving aid I can’t turn off.  If a time comes when that’s not an option, I’ll disconnect what I need to and live with a warning lamp.

While it’s understandable to not give owners much credit, I feel like you’re being too harsh. Most trucks with towing packages have various do-dads and levers and stuff that are unique from truck to truck and take a second to learn. It’s certainly not too much for the Dodge owner to figure out that they need to press a button to turn the AEB system off. Heck, the truck may turn it off itself when it detects a trailer is wired up.

Perhaps I’ve been a bit of an ogre,  BUT I have had to sit and read the manual to owners of trucks, convinced they’re gonna get something for nothing by noticing a bunch of shit they never noticed before.  “My Tailgate handle LED never stayed on that long before you touched my truck”  More than once.

did you see the six-way tailgate?  at least one good idea in there, but one garden tractor will destroy it.

This batch of customers work the oil rigs.  They do dirty like you couldn’t even fathom.  Hence the term “RIG PIG”.    super nice truck though.

No shit lol, I wrote an Accord this afternoon with the right rear park sensor literally painted yellow with transfer from a garage bollard.

It’s a decked out Hybrid with all the bells and whistles, took me longer to get the fucking cluster to display the odometer than it did to write the estimate.  My best guess is that the alarm tone is a frequency the drivers hearing aid blocks out?  Or he’s a raging alcoholic?  No clue...

I used to install blow’n’go breathalyser interlocks.  There are some surprisingly high-functioning raging alkies driving around out there.

I work at a Chrysler dealership, and I hate these sensors. If it THINKS you’re too close it stops immediately, leading to a momentary panic of “what did I just hit?!” And what was it? NOTHING.

Two cameras, one on the tailgate and one trailer. Probably an algorithm that takes the trailer picture and overlays it on the tailgate camera, masks out what the tailgate can't see. So like two sets of negative space images.

Oh yeah, I’m also in a town with a small college for exceptionally rich children.

We do a lot of repairs where mommy and daddy call in at completion with credit cards to cover the expensive part of junior’s weekend tab.

Yea it should.  There are a few people that have swapped the new charger front end onto Magnums and they actually look really good.  I’m saving up money/time now for the 6 speed manual swap.
